Music Journalist

We’re always looking for creative individuals with a burning passion for music, from all corners of the globe, to join the IAMUR family. This role will be suited to self-motivated, inquisitive individuals who enjoy conducting research, carrying out interviews, and have a flair for creative writing. Whilst being a voluntary position, it presents an excellent opportunity for those with an interest in gaining experience in music journalism or working towards journalism as a full-time career.

Basic description

Successful candidates will be responsible for their own workloads and tasked primarily with; identifying artists, bands, producers, songwriters, etc. to research and carry out interviews (in person, remotely via telephone, video conference, or structured online interview forms). Following research and interview, successful candidates will compile an article that will be submitted for online publication in the IAMUR music magazine. Good music knowledge, creativity, self-motivation, and good time management skills are required for this role. Prior experience in music journalism is preferred, but not essential as full support and guidance will be provided.

Responsibilities

Your workload will vary depending on your own schedule and availability, however, we would expect at least two features per month, with no upper limit. Your responsibilities will typically include:

  • researching a subject and story
  • writing and editing stories, features and news articles according to the IAMUR’s brand
  • ensuring work is well written, accurate and submitted to deadline
  • carrying out interviews, either in person or remotely
  • conducting music reviews (live events, single/EP/album releases)
  • sourcing media (images & audio) to accompany written pieces
  • meeting/ liaising with the IAMUR team to plan the content of the issue and schedule for publication
  • keeping up to date with trends and developments relating to the magazine’s subject matter.

Salary

This is a voluntary position and one without remuneration, therefore suited to creative free-thinkers with an interest in online journalism. We present a fantastic opportunity for anyone meeting the criteria to join a young, experienced, and dynamic team of established writers from across the globe. Successful candidates will benefit from mentoring and support, freedom to select their own work (subject to IAMUR guidelines), and demonstrable experience to support endeavours in securing a paid job.

Working hours

Entirely down to you and your availability, although we do expect any agreed copy deadlines are met. The IAMUR team are located in the UK, Europe, USA, and Canada, which can mean irregular hours are common.

What to expect

This position provides you with an opportunity to meet a range of people across all areas of the music industry. There are typically no hard-and-fast deadlines to adhere to, although you will be expected to manage your own work schedules, submitting at least two pieces of work each month. Your submitted work will be published and credited to you in the IAMUR online music magazine. In the first instance, leads can be assigned to you and over time you will proactively seek out leads of your own volition. The team will be on hand to offer support and guidance, as and where necessary.
