Australian synth-pop artist, Cory Jones, releases “Things I Can’t Do Alone”.

“It’s about late nights out in the city, feeling a genuine connection with other people. I wanted to capture a point in time where everyone’s about to go home, but no one wants the night to end.”

Things I Can’t Do Alone, depending on how you read into it, is an ironic title for the Newcastle, Australia based solo artist, who writes, records and produces all his work single-handedly. When we interviewed Cory back in July last year, he explained that he’s been playing guitar since he was ten years old, and had spent countless hours on his laptop learning how to write and record songs to show his school friends. Winding forward a few years, his desire for musical experimentation and expression has led to the release of four singles throughout 2021, and his first single for this year, Things I Can’t Do Alone.

The pandemic continues to be a bittersweet life event, though for Cory and many other artists, it’s been an opportunity to work on new material. As the world gradually returns to some kind of normality, Cory’s new song, Things I Can’t Do Alone, reflects on all those things we missed out on during covid. Cory tells us “it’s about late nights out in the city, feeling a genuine connection with other people. I wanted to capture a point in time where everyone’s about to go home, but no one wants the night to end“, and opens with lyrics that describe the end of an evening many revellers will undoubtedly be familiar with.

“As with all my songs, this was recorded, mixed, and mastered by me at home. It’s a habit I formed during lockdown that I think will be staying for a while.”

Cory’s latest single continues with his signature hooky synth-pop and ’80s style lead guitar, coloured in with sensuous strings and spacious vocals. “It almost reminds me of Cher’s Believe“, says Cory, explaining that producing this track has helped him get closer to finding his feet with his musical style, blending organic instruments with synthetic ones.

“The recent jump in streams I got from my last song ‘Like A Movie’ has only pushed my motivation through the roof to create more music for people to listen to. I’ve already been writing like a madman every day, and I’m genuinely excited for what 2022 is going to bring.”
